PrairieGen – Highlighting Genetic Diversity

PrairieGen is a genomics-based project that will study the genetic diversity of people in Manitoba (MB) and Saskatchewan (SK) to find important genetic markers, variations, and risk factors that affect health. Administered by Genome Prairie, PrairieGen builds on existing health studies in these provinces, such as research on multiple sclerosis, schizophrenia, cancer, and other conditions.

By combining health record, protein and metabolic data with the new genetic data, physicians and researchers will provide more personalized treatments, lower healthcare costs increase efficiencies in the healthcare system, and enhance health outcomes for people in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The project as a whole may also inform policymakers making healthcare policy decisions. A central aspect of the PrairieGen project is the secure and ethical stewardship of participant data. By using advanced technology and local expertise, PrairieGen aims to make MB and SK leaders in precision health, improving the health of people in these provinces
